Federal Funding Granted in Support of Aurora Project

The Aurora Project made incredible strides this month, as additional funding was secured in support of the $40 million dollar expansion and reimagining of the science centre.

On Thursday, May 25, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and Member of Parliament (Edmonton Mill Woods), and Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre) visited TELUS World of Science – Edmonton to announce $3.35 million in support of the Edmonton Space & Science Foundation.

“TELUS World of Science – Edmonton is an iconic facility in the city that has helped educate and entertain millions of Edmontonians,” said Alan Nursall, President and CEO. “This funding will support the renovation of the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre planetarium and the Space Place gallery. We are thankful that the Government of Canada values the contribution science and technology offer to the community.”

Minister Sohi and Mr. Boissonnault made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

This support, provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada Cultural Spaces fund, follows the City of Edmonton’s gracious contribution of $12-million two years ago, which helped to kick-start the first-phase of the Aurora Project in 2015.
“We are grateful for the Government of Canada’s contribution towards the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, and the Aurora Project,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “It will enable job growth and enhance the visitor experience in our city. A project of this size couldn’t have come together without partnership. Together with the contributions from the Edmonton Space & Science Centre Foundation, philanthropists and the commitment from the Government of Canada and City Council’s contribution of $12 million, this project is one step closer to completion.”

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton wishes to thank both the Canadian Government and City of Edmonton for their continued support of both the science centre and the Aurora Project.

Construction of the new North Dome Theatre and S.P.A.C.E. Gallery will commence in the fall.

Here’s to forward movement; onward and upward!
